Doppelganger

One of the Sysmidgets had a rough week. He has a few behavioral/emotional developmental problems. He's getting the double whammy of being labeled "the weird kid" by his classmates, with whom he's struggling to find acceptance, and pressure from his teachers to keep up (also tough). In order to catch up, he read a 200-page book, start-to-finish, Thursday evening and Friday morning before school.

Friday morning, before he woke up, we found his pet parakeet dead on the bottom of its cage. We hid the cage until he and his brothers left for school.

We just lost our dog recently. And our son loves his bird. It was only 2 years old (they have a life span of 10-15 years). We're not normally the type to shield the kids from real life. They've been at family funerals (lots of them, unfortunately) since they've been born.

But this time, I didn't want to lay this on him. So, while he was at school, I went shopping. I bought another bird. It's a perfect match.

Or so I thought. One of the younger boys saw it later and said, "Look, he has gray on him now!". But the older one looked at him and said, "That's normal. He's just molting."

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't like lying to him. But I didn't want him heartbroken.

5:33 PM

It's not lying. Did anyone directly ask you if the bird had died? No.

See, I could be an oil company executive in front of congress!

5:33 PM

Seriously, you weighed your options, and did what you thought would best help your children. Relax.

5:33 PM

And get your birds away from the window.

7:04 PM

I wish my dad had cared enough to protect me from things like that.

10:31 PM

I would have done the same thing.

2:19 AM

Tough call, but I would agree with the other folks... it's not wrong at all. I love the molting remark by your kid. That's quick thinking.

10:10 AM

Savez-vous au sujet de ce qu'est toute l'exagration ?Adios, Freddie liposuction new york city

2:18 PM

It's in French therefore I choose to believe it's a real person.

I'm sorry about your bird, but I would have taken the same path you did.

9:43 PM

Given everything that is going on, it was the sane thing to do.

Übie scares me when she goes into Oil Executive Mode. I expect her to wear an Alito mask at any moment.

11:53 PM

I'm sorry to change the subject but you have to check this out. I think it's cool. Especially The Thunderbolts.

4:50 AM

I had a kitten when I was 9 named Tator and my sister let it out in the road. They told me it ran away, but it was tiny and I knew it was a big fat lie. I felt lied to, but I've always taken honesty very personally.

4:51 AM

But listen to ubermilf cause she's really wise.
