Lefty

Al Gato and I were talking about this today. Do you think the outrage over Congressman Foley would've been the same if he had been making sexual overtures to teenage girls rather than teenage boys? The guy is a perv, no doubt. But I think a small part of the public revulsion has to do with the Gay angle (which is 38 degrees). By the way, isn't it kind of cool that the story broke from a Blogger home page?

The way the Speaker of the House has been playing this has been pretty laughable. I hope that the allegations from Representative Thomas Reynolds have some traction. I'm crossing my fingers for a tilt in the balance of power. A Democrat controlled Congress might actually have the balls (and the ovaries), to hold the Administration accountable for the worst abuse of power in my lifetime. And I'm old.

In Congress, incumbents are re-elected over 95% of the time. That's some straight up bullshit. In my neck of the woods, which probably closely resembles yours, those members of Congress who decide not to run again are usually able to hand-pick their successor. And the party apparatus will do their part to make sure that the seat stays in the hands of the same political party. My local congressman, Henry Hyde, isn't running for re-election. Which is a good thing. He's a douche-bag, and he fucked with one of Tits McGee's boyfriends in a totally hypocritical way. His designated heir is a man named Peter Roskam. Not terribly distinguished, nor undistinguished. Just a career Republican politician. The Democrats have picked an ideal candidate to go against him. Tammy Duckworth is a former Illinois National Guard Captain. She lost both her legs in a rocket attack while serving in Iraq. What she lacks in previous political experience (which is, in itself, a bonus as far as I'm concerned), her ability to negate the Republican message of a weak Democratic response to the war in Iraq just makes me so happy. I volunteered to work on her campaign last week. I've been cold-calling registered voters. Mailing post cards. Putting up yard signs. That kind of stuff.

12:09 AM

I love you.

1:06 AM

I merely like you a great deal. Can you maybe send me some pictures of yourself?

Wait. Am I allowed to make that joke?

8:24 AM

The Foley thing depresses me to no end.

The only outrage is coming from non-Republicans, in the form of, "Ha! Hypocrites! 'Family Values-party' my ass!"

The republicans are just spinning, spinning, spinning this to avoid political damage.

Meanwhile, the real issue of pedophilia and adults taking advantage of teens for their own sexual pleasure remains untackled.

Tell me, how is the Republican leadership covering up this systemic abuse of pages different than the Catholic bishop's response? Why was that front page news for months and months while this is being played off as "naughty e-mails?"

Foley isn't the only guy doing this to the young people working in Washington. I can't believe that any decent Republican person in this country isn't calling for the kind of mass overhaul of the system and protection of young people that the Church rightly was.

Then again, I believe it. Sadly.

10:21 AM

Here's another thing that pisses me off: when a teen-aged boy is involved, people say, "Why wasn't I that lucky?" or some other bullshit.

Or, even worse in this case, the stomach-turning, "He wasn't innocent. He was 16 years old."

Think back to when you were that age, and what a powerful tool of manipulation sex was. Were you able to reason as well then as you are now?

Somehow boys aren't impressionable or hurtable? That makes me so angry. So very, very angry.

3:59 PM

why is nobody addressing the fact that the monkey drank its own pee?

GENIUS LEVEL.
