Bad Music Thursday (early edition)
My friend Lance came into the cafeteria. "This is going to be great. Two guys from Yes are forming a band with the drummer from ELP and the bass player from King Crimson."
"Tony Levin?" I asked
No, the original King Crimson, "Court of the Crimson King" era.
I was not a big prog-rock fan. But I liked the Adrian Belew/Robert Fripp/Bill Bruford/Tony Levin King Crimson. And I liked Peter Gabriel. So, prog was capable of producing music I liked. And, the most recent Yes album, "Drama", was pretty good. It had the two guys from the Buggles in it, Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn.
"The band is called Asia," said Lance. "They're coming to Chicago right after the album comes out. Do you want to go?"
"Sure."
The album came out a few weeks later. It blew. It looked for the Journey demographic, then aimed lower. Cheesy. Insipid. Cliched. And those were its good points. I went to the concert. But I rarely took Lance's recommendations after that.
And Supergroups? The only Supergroup that's ever been worth a damn are the SuperFriends. And maybe Josie and the Pussycats. Want some other examples?
Ted Nugent + Styx + Night Ranger = Damn Yankees
Okay, the ingredients weren't that hot.
Van Halen + Sammy Hagar = An abomination
And Audioslave. Does anyone actually like Audioslave? Uuughh. Bleecchhh.
Heat of the Moment (MIDI)
I never meant to be so bad to you
One thing I said that I would never do
One look from you and I would fall from grace
And that would wipe this smile right from my face
Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidence arose from circumstance
One thing lead to another we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung
{chorus}
It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what your heart meant
Heat of the moment shone in your eyes
And now you find yourself in 82
The disco hotspots hold no charm for you
You can’t concern yourself with bigger things
You catch the pearl and ride the dragon’s wings
{chorus}
And when your looks are gone and you’re alone
How many nights you sit beside the phone
What were the things you wanted for yourself
Teenage ambition you remember well
I'm out to stamp out temporal relativism. It's a logical extension of cultural relativism.
Cultural relativism is defined as: "Cultural relativism is the form of moral relativism that holds that all ethical truth is relative to a specified culture. According to cultural relativism, it is never true to say simply that a certain kind of behaviour is right or wrong; rather, it can only ever be true that a certain kind a behaviour is right or wrong relative to a specified society."
Temporal relativism would suggest that when making judgments about the past, one should limit themselves to facts that were known (or generally accepted) at that point in time.
So, at the time of the Bay City Rollers debut, people thought they were a legitimate musical act. Much like today we stand in awe of the musical artistry of Kevin Federline or the Black Eyed Peas.
8:06 AM
I never trust anyone named "Lance"
8:48 AM
Dilf is right. Never trust "Lance."
Also, I think I have you beat this week, just from sheer volume of awfulness.
