Who's down with GOP?

My Dad and I were driving by a gas station, and he was noticing the rapidly falling price of a gallon of gas. I said, "I would think the oil companies would prefer a Republican congress to a Democratic one."

Apparently, my cynicism is widely held. According to a story in the USA Today:
According to a new Gallup poll, 42% of respondents agreed with the statement that the Bush administration "deliberately manipulated the price of gasoline so that it would decrease before this fall's elections." Fifty-three percent of those surveyed did not believe the conspiracy theory; 5% said they had no opinion.

I doubt that the Administration has had a direct, controlling hand in price-fixing. But the oil industry clearly knows who their friends are. Fuckers.

What mechanism could the President or the Republicans use to manipulate the price of gas over the short term?

What this seems to say very clearly is that "42 percent of respondents" don't know their asses from holes in the ground about how markets work.

This is a sad comment on our democracy.

Please READ my posts before commenting. Quoting myself:

In other words (tiny ones, just in case), the oil companies have made ob-fucking-scene, record-breaking profits under a Republican-controlled Executive and Legislative Branch. There has been no real congressional scrutiny of their practices. It is in their best interest to temporarily reduce one of the major hot-button issues for swing voters. "CCompetition" doesn't provide for an instant 20% price drop, when there have been no changes in either supply or demand.

So again. In capital letters this time. FUCKERS.

My take is: no, the administration does not have the power to dictate oil prices, but the oil companies have the ability, and are using collusion to try to influence politics.

I feel this same way regarding the New Orleans/Atlanta game on Monday and The Saints in general. The Saints, the second worst team in the league last year, get handed Reggie Bush in the draft, then rout a clearly better team in their first game back in the Super Dome on Monday Night? How convenient.

They have a new coach, a new QB, a Rookie RB, a new offensive scheme and they are 3-0. You know how many times that has happened in the history of Football? Never.

Of course, your thing is way more important.

OPEC accounts for about 40% of the world's production of crude oil, from which gasoline is made.

F*ckers.

About 53% of the price of a gallon of gasoline is the price of crude oil.

And demand is below projected levels.

This is how markets work.

There HAS been a 20% drop in crude oil prices from OPEC.

I sit corrected.
